Concrete Floor Screed
Choose the Right Screed for Your Project
Types of Floor Screed We Supply
Conventional 4:1 Sand and Cement Screed
This traditional mix has a moist consistency that is compacted down to create your finished floor. We add hair-like fibres to improve bonding while the screed cures, along with a retarder that gives you 4 to 6 hours of working time. This screed works perfectly under carpet, tile, or wood flooring.
Flow Screed
This is a self-levelling product with a soupy consistency that finds its own level across the floor. Flow screed needs to be pumped into place and requires a watertight floor with a membrane laid first to stop any fluid from escaping. It is excellent for larger areas and projects requiring a perfectly flat finish. For difficult-to-reach sites, our concrete pumping service can place screed through houses, up alleyways, and over walls using line pumps running up to 100 metres.
Where Floor Screeding Works Best
Uses for Concrete Floor Screed
Residential Flooring
Create a solid, level base for any room in your home. Whether you are laying tiles in your kitchen, carpet in your living room, or wood flooring in your hallway, screed provides the smooth foundation you need.
Commercial and Industrial Spaces
Warehouses, workshops, retail units, and offices all benefit from screed flooring. It handles heavy foot traffic and can support machinery and stock. In some cases, the screed itself can be left as the final floor surface
Renovation Projects
If you are updating an older property, screed is perfect for levelling out uneven existing floors before fitting new flooring
Underfloor Heating Systems
Floor screed is one of the best coverings for underfloor heating, spreading warmth evenly and holding heat for longer. For home projects such as these, take a look at our domestic concrete page for the full range of mixes and services we offer for residential builds.
Grades Available from Our Volumetric Lorries
Screed Mixes for Different Applications
Our volumetric lorries can mix different screed grades on site to match your exact requirements. The beauty of volumetric mixing is that you only pay for what you actually use, and we can adjust the mix as needed during your pour.
For standard floor screeding, we typically use a 4:1 cement to sand ratio, which creates a workable mix suitable for most domestic and commercial floors. For areas expecting heavier use, we can adjust the mix to provide greater strength and durability.
The depth of your screed will depend on how it is being laid. Bonded screeds (attached directly to the concrete base) can be as thin as 25 to 40mm. Unbonded screeds (laid over a membrane) need to be at least 50mm thick. Floating screeds (laid over insulation or underfloor heating) require a minimum of 65mm, or 75mm for floors expecting heavy loads.
Before you get in touch, use our concrete calculator to work out how much screed you need so we can make sure the right amount is delivered to your site.

What is the difference between concrete and screed?
Both concrete and screed contain cement, water, and aggregate. However, concrete uses larger stones and gravel for structural strength, while screed uses finer sharp sand to create a smooth top layer. Concrete forms the strong base of your floor, and screed is applied on top to create a level, finished surface.
How long does floor screed take to dry?
Drying time depends on the type and thickness of your screed. Most screeds can be walked on carefully after 24 to 48 hours. However, you should wait around 7 days before moving furniture or equipment onto the floor. For the screed to fully cure and reach its maximum strength, allow 28 days before laying tiles or other floor coverings.
Can screed be laid over underfloor heating?
Yes, screed is one of the best options for covering underfloor heating pipes. It protects the pipes, conducts heat evenly across the floor, and helps retain warmth. We recommend a minimum thickness of 65mm over underfloor heating, with at least 25mm of coverage above the pipes themselves.
Do I need screed for my project?
If you want a smooth, level floor for laying tiles, carpet, wood, or other finishes, then yes, screed is usually the best choice. It is especially important if your concrete base is uneven or if you have underfloor heating. Our team can advise whether screed is right for your specific project when you call for a quote.
